Chris
Britt, who draws for the State Journal-Register in Illinois, nabbed this
year's SDX, the Sigma Delta Chi Award for excellence, given by the Society
of Professional Journalists. The awards will be presented during the SPJ
Convention and National Journalism Conference, August 27-30 in Indianapolis.
The Aronson Awards for Social Justice Journalism has named its 2009 winners, and among the distinguished journalists is Ed Stein, former staff cartoonist at the now defunct Rocky Mountain News.
Stein's work was recognized for “its graphic sophistication covering the economy, torture and other crucial issues.”
The Aronson Awards have been presented since 1990 to journalists who measure business, government and social affairs against clear ideals of the common good. The awards are named in honor of James Aronson, the distinguished Hunter College professor of journalism who was editor from 1949 to 1967 of the crusading newsweekly The National Guardian.
Canadian cartoonist Bruce MacKinnon, of the Chronicle Herald, was awarded the 2009 Atlantic Journalism Award.
Michael Ramirez, of Investor's Business Daily, was the winner of this year's NCS division award for editorial cartooning.
In May, Kevin Kallaugher posted the following online: “Our cartoonist friend Dave Horsey deserves some hardy congratulations for winning a top award ... IN COLUMN WRITING.
“Here's the announcement from the Best of the West journalism competition: 'Special Topic Column Writing, First Place: David Horsey, Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Judges' remarks: 'Although better known for his editorial cartoons, these columns by Horsey from the 2008 campaign trail demonstrate that the author has as much a knack for words as for images. He brought real people and their issues to life in smart, descriptive prose. The columns all drip with palpable sense of place and a keen sense of the characters who inhabit those places.'”
Finally, as noted over on the Daily Cartoonist, our old friend David Astor came in Second Place in the New Jersey Press Association for the humor column he writes for The Montclair Times. Way to go, Dave!
