The Washington Post asks How Soon is Too Soon to make a political comment after a disaster? After posting cartoons on Hurricane Harvey and its aftermath, several cartoonists were slammed on social media for their takes. Michael Cavna talks to Matt Wuerker, Rob Rogers, Nate Beeler and Rick McKee about why they drew what they drew in today's Comic Riffs.
Although a half-dozen cartoonists commented on the irony of anti-government citizens happy to see the government show up to help, Wuerker's August 29 cartoon for Politico became the target of a posting on Breitbart and national news media. Spurred on by the fact that Politico later deleted a tweet with a link to the cartoon, Wuerker and his news outlet received a raft of negative replies. The cartoonist pointed out in later message that the piece was never pulled from the site itself, and that it had the full support of his editors at Politico.
