Congratulations to Damian Alexander, this year's recipient of the Locher Award for best aspiring college-age cartoonist. Alexander is a graduate student at Boston's Simmons College. His illustrations highlight personal experiences with social equality, LGBTQ issues, and mental health.
Honorable mentions went to to Madeline Witt, James Tsiridis, and Moaz Elemam. You can find links to all recipients work here.
Since 1987, the Locher Award has sought out aspiring cartoonists, ages 18-25, whose work demonstrates both clear opinions and strong artistry on political and social topics. The award includes a $1,000 cash prize and an all-expense-paid trip to the annual convention of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists.
The Locher Award was named in honor of the late son of Dick and Mary Locher. Dick Locher a Pulitzer-prize winning editorial cartoonist, and artist for the "Dick Tracy" comic strip, passed away earlier this year.
